Vitosha SnowKite School teaches snowkiting on the Vitosha plateau above Sofia, Bulgaria, at 1,960 m across three levels, from a first session with a kite to riding on your own. Lessons are taught by Yordan Rangelov; the kite equipment is included, and skis or a snowboard, ski goggles and warm clothing are your own — goggles are required. First glides come after 3–4 hours of instruction, so a lesson is a first introduction and the course is the way there. Prices start at €60 for 1 hour. Lessons run through the season (December to April).

The sport

What is snowkiting?

Snowkiting is kitesurfing on snow — a winter alternative to the water, and one of the easiest ways into kite sports if you are starting from scratch.

3–4 hours

Most people make their first glides after 3–4 hours of instruction. A lesson is a first introduction; the course takes you there and on to riding on your own.

Power zone. Most pull. Where you get going — and where you pay attention.

Edge of the window. Almost no pull. Where you stop and wait.

Who the lessons are for:

  • Complete beginners who have never flown a kite — snowkiting is the easiest way to start.

  • Skiers and snowboarders looking for a new winter challenge with no lifts, no queues and no lift pass.

  • Kitesurfers who want to stay sharp through the winter or tighten up their kite control.
